The story comes from anger at the politicized existence of Black and brown and queer kids who are just trying to live their lives. It comes from the frustration that urban fantasy stories were never about people like me or the people I loved. It comes from the powerless despair at the US political systems that treat Black and brown teens as if they were already lost causes, doomed to a life of crime....
